Legislature Unlikely to Pass Funding for Education

Governor's Focus on Divisive Social Issues Distracted from Real Responsibilities

Austin - With the Texas Legislature facing an imminent deadline to finish the
state budget, House and Senate budget negotiators are expected to announce that
the Legislature is unable to agree on a plan for funding public and higher
education. State Rep. Mike Villarreal, a member of the House Appropriations
Subcommittee on Education, released the following statement:

"The Legislature has failed to accomplish our most important responsibility --
providing schools with the support they need to educate our children. The
Legislature has been focused on divisive social issues that the Governor put at
the top of the agenda instead of ensuring our schoolchildren receive a quality
education. If the Legislature returns over the summer, parents, teachers, and
students will have an opportunity persuade their elected representatives to put
our kids' education first."
