We often hear within our societal discourse that people from diverse backgrounds, people of color or immigrants for example, simply need to assimilate and that people need to learn the cultural norms and values of middle-class America. We also hear that students from disadvantaged backgrounds would simply do better if they were exposed to a solidly middle-class (and presumably Anglo) school environment.
A new research study from the University of Michigan finds this notion to be categorically false (Ethnic Pride Important to well-being of Latino Students). The idea that people need to just learn to act like the middle-class is harmful and can even increase the risk of suicide. It is essentially telling people to become colonized.
