PRESS CALL ADVISORY: Rep. Joaquin Castro Joins Progressive Leaders to Urge Congressional Action on Key Priorities
Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, January 11, Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), the Center for American Progress, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and UnidosUS will hold a telephonic press conference to unveil a letter penned by progressive leaders, which delivers a clear message to Senate Majority Leader McConnell (R-KY), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI), and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): By January 19 or earlier, Congress must address—as part of any deal to fund the government—urgent and unfinished business, including the need to provide permanent protection for Dreamers, relief to areas affected by recent natural disasters, and reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
Castro, along with these progressive leaders, will remind Congress that millions of Americans are counting on it to ensure that there will be no further delays on all of these key priorities, which have been held hostage for far too long. For the reasons laid out in the letter, many organizations have signed on to demand congressional action. They include Center for American Progress; UnidosUS; Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights; National Education Association; Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP); United We Dream (UWD); Public Citizen; Planned Parenthood Federation of America; Faith in Public Life; Latino Victory Project; American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU); American Constitution Society; Service Employees International Union (SEIU); Voto Latino; Alliance for Justice; PolicyLink; Center for Community Change; Indivisible; MoveOn.org Civic Action; America’s Voice; MomsRising; Asian Americans Advancing Justice (AAJC); Human Rights Campaign (HRC); National LGBTQ Task Force Action Fund; League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC); National Immigration Law Center (NILC); Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF); National Association of Social Workers; National Partnership for Women and Families; United Farm Workers (UFW); CREDO; National Korean American Service and Education Consortium (NAKASEC); Truman National Security Project; American Federation of Teachers; GreenLatinos; League of Conservation Voters (LCV); American Federation of State, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME); Lambda Legal; People For the American Way; PICO National Network; National Center for Lesbian Rights; Human Rights First; Children’s Defense Fund; Center for Popular Democracy; UNITE HERE; National Women’s Law Center; Coalition on Human Needs; Main Street Alliance; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); NETWORK; Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism; and Economic Policy Institute Policy Center.
