The Psychological Impact of Child Separation at the U.S-Mexico Border," by Dean Luis H. Zayas

Dr. Zayas is Dean of the College of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. I am so glad to know that he did this TED Talk because it helps to inform broader audiences about this cruel travesty heaped upon society's most vulnerable, namely, children. Many will have enduring, life-long effects, and our school systems, caretakers, and our criminal justice system will be contending with the effects of their traumas for many years to come, sadly.

How does psychological trauma affect children's developing brains? In this powerful talk, social worker Luis H. Zayas discusses his work with refugees and asylum-seeking families at the US-Mexico border. What emerges is a stunning analysis of the long-term impact of the US's controversial detention and child separation policies -- and practical steps for how the country can do better. This talk was presented at an official TED conference, and was featured by our editors on the home page.
