Fourteen Things the Texas Legislature Can Do After Uri

"The following blog is adapted from written testimony submitted to the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce, House Committee on Energy Resources, and House Committee on State Affairs by Cyrus Reed, Conservation Director of the Sierra Club's Lone Star Chapter, on Feb. 24 2021."

Short of actually regulating the market or integrating it—through the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT)—to the western or eastern grid, Cyrus Reed offers suggestions on how to put our state on a sustainable path. It must, however, take into account that the Public Utility Commission (PUC) that makes policy has to be part of the equation.  The legislature, too.

He clarifies that fingers are point at ERCOT, however, its role is to implement the policies devised by the PUC.

Believing in climate change would also help. My own personal view is that they do know about climate change, but that it's not profitable to these energy scions to "think" otherwise.

I really think more of us need to venture into energy policy. As school leaders and teachers, we should even develop curriculum around this and prepare teachers to teach it. We're all left in the dark—figuratively and literally—without this focus. And those in power benefit abundantly from our systemic lack of attention and ignorance about such matters. They aim to keep it that way.  We must push back.

Texans would do well to keep these issues front and center lest we repeat the mistakes of the current Gov. Abbott administration.
