INVITATION: 7th Annual Statewide [VIRTUAL] Summit on Mexican American Studies TOMORROW—June 11, 2022

FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Please join us tomorrow morning on Saturday, June 11, 2022 for our 7th Annual Statewide  [VIRTUAL] Summit on Mexican American Studies where an array of topics will get discussed. I, along with El Librotraficante, Tony Diaz, are on a panel where policy and politics will get discussed. As you can see from the flyer announcement, we are featuring other important breakout sessions focused on Elementary-level, and high school Social Studies, Fine Arts, Literature, higher education, and community engagement. Texas State Rep. Christina Morales, who championed House Bill 1504 in the 2021 87th legislative session with significant bipartisan support, will be one of our honored guests. Also present will be Texas SBOE Members Ruben Cortez, and Marisa Perez-Diaz who will offer SBOE updates to our community (see next week's SBOE agenda [pdf]). Other highlights are tributes to the legendary Dr. Rudy Acuña and the beloved late Dr. Rolando Hinojosa-Smith, together with a call to legislative action by Dr. Emilio Zamora in the wake of the Uvalde tragedy. This event is sponsored by the NACCS Tejas Foco, an organization that has been advocating for Ethnic Studies getting taught in the curriculum since 2013. As a consequence of our actions, Texas now offers TEKS standards-aligned, elective courses in Mexican American and African American Studies. Native American Studies is on a calendar for review by the SBOE, with Asian American Studies in the wings right now so that ultimately, it, too, shall get taught in our schools. We are well aware that powerful forces would like to silence us. That's not going to happen. We will not be silenced. What for anyway? We offer the sacred knowledge, ancestral wisdom, policy solutions, and healing medicine that are good for the soul.
