COE-Education Dean's Office

About the University of Georgia:

Since our founding in 1785, the University of Georgia has operated as Georgia’s oldest, most comprehensive, and most diversified institution of higher education (https://www.uga.edu/). The proof is in our more than 235 years of academic and professional achievements and our continual commitment to higher education. UGA is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University’s main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton. UGA employs approximately 3,000 faculty and more than 7,700 full-time staff. The University’s enrollment exceeds 40,000 students including over 30,000 undergraduates and over 10,000 graduate and professional students. Academic programs reside in 18 schools and colleges, as well as a medical partnership with Augusta University housed on the UGA Health Sciences Campus in Athens.

About the College/Unit/Department:

The University of Georgia (www.uga.edu) is a land grant/sea grant institution located in Athens, Georgia, 65 miles northeast of Atlanta. Athens is known for its music, art, food and cost of living, as well as its accessibility to the Atlanta area, the beautiful Georgia coast, the North Georgia mountains, and other natural features (see www.visitathensga.com and www.georgia.gov). The Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFECOE) is committed to promoting diversity in education and society through its Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, through its research and teaching missions, and through collaborative work with community residents and organizations. Its Elementary Education and Curriculum and Instruction programs consistently rank in the top ten nationally. The excellence of the faculty has enabled the MFECOE to recruit doctoral students nationally and internationally and place them in a variety of prestigious positions following graduation, further enhancing the College’s outstanding global reputation.

As the 4th largest public college of education in the country, and the 3rd largest college at UGA, the Mary Frances Early College of Education (MFECOE) improves the lives of residents of Georgia and beyond through our instruction, research, and service. Named for Mary Frances Early, UGA’s first African American graduate, in February 2020, the MFE COE has a long and distinguished history as a leader in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our other strengths include a) partnerships with multiple units on campus, in the local community, and across the state of Georgia, b) faculty expertise manifested in well- regarded scholarship and applied practice, and c) recognition of our academic programs by external stakeholders.

CLASE is committed to UGA’s tripartite mission of research, teaching and service and engages in an integrated array of research, professional development, and outreach initiatives to effectively prepare teachers and school personnel to effectively work with Latino students and families. CLASE has developed a formidable reputation for providing a range of teacher professional learning opportunities and resources grounded in a culturally responsive pedagogical model, Instructional Conversations (ICs), that supports academic and linguistic (often multiliterate) achievement of Latino students while promoting resilient and strong multicultural identities. Through these professional learning offerings, CLASE has developed a teacher community of practice (CoP) that now includes more than 2,000 educators of Latino and other culturally and linguistically diverse learners. CLASE actively works to create collaborative partnerships with a range of stakeholders at the local, state, national and international levels to conduct research to support the educational outcomes of Latino students. Leveraging the expertise and experience of the Center’s interdisciplinary cohort of Goizueta Foundation Graduate Assistants, CLASE also provides outreach and mentoring support to P-12 students regarding post-secondary goals and pathways. CLASE further provides program support for districts in developing strategic plans for supporting culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
