Every Texas superintendent needs to listen to this excellent interview of Austin Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Elizalde and Evan Smith of the Texas Tribune. She covers all the hard topics with such poise, ranging from the pandemic response, Critical Race Theory, banned books, culturally responsive teaching, attendance-based funding and budgeting, staff and teacher salaries, as well as her own ethnic identity as a Latina and how that matters in relation to student and teacher demographics. I think that we should all appreciate how research guides all her decisions and responses to Evan Smith's questions.
Dr. Elizalde is not only bold and fearless, but direct and eloquent. She is the model of the kind of school leader we need in this crucial time in public education that, as she correctly acknowledges, is under attack by anti-democratic, political forces currently at play in our state and nation.
Thank you, Dr. Elizalde for your intelligent, thoughtful, and courageous leadership, particularly considering this difficult and challenging role as our school district superintendent throughout these many months of the pandemic.
Felices Fiestas! Happy Holidays! You make us proud! 💖
