If you are an elementary school teachers, consider taking a deep dive into critical, multicultural education textbooks if you haven't already.  While you're at it, you would do well to learn about the field of multicultural education itself. Rethinking Schools out of Milwaukee has been addressing  this for some time now.

For example, this text title, Rethinking Multicultural Education is an excellent resource for getting a sense of what the range of concerns are within the field of multicultural education.  Another excellent text is Teaching for Black Lives: Black students’ minds and bodies are under attack. We’re fighting back. Here’s an in-depth set of resources on Native American Indigenous Enslavement books from my blog. Another post titled, For Texas Teachers:  A Framework for Teaching American Slavery is loaded with resources. Dr. Laura Alamillo, Larissa Mercado-Lopez, and Cristina Herrera also have a wonderful book titled, Voices of Resistance: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Chican@ Children's Literature.

Another great resource is the Tomas Rivera Children’s Book Award that is social justice oriented that one of our graduates, Dr. Jesse Gainer has directed over the years.  Here is a link to book activities.

From their website, they list additional Useful Resources related to award-winning books:

·         Tomás Rivera Award Books
·         Pura Belpré Award Books
·         Coretta Scott King Award Books
·         Jane Addams Award Books
·         Rethinking Schools website

For Native Americans, I just found this great resource: 40 Children's Books Celebrating Native American and Indigenous Mighty Girls.  Here’s a great listing of Aztec children’s books, too. For Asian Americans, consider both Asian & Asian American Children’s Books for Ages 0 to 18 and Asian American Books List for Kids. For African American children’s books, the Coretta Scott King Award mentioned above is excellent.  Please also see the following wonderful websites:

For small children, a place to start might be the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

Also for teachers and everyone, here is the The Anti-Racist Starter Pack: 40 TV Series, Documentaries, Movies, TED Talks, and Books to Add to Your List

Happy reading! Enjoy!
