Dora Olivo is also running for re-election in Fort Bend and Wharton Counties in District 85. Our state needs a champion to do away with all high-stakes testing in the state of Texas and to move our state in the direction of holistic, multiple criteria assessment. The entire nation is looking at us right now because they are aware of the backlash against high-stakes testing in Texas.
Indeed, to her credit and the Civil Rights community that has fought this battle in earnest since the G.I. Forum v. the Texas Education Agency and the State Board of Education (2000), Representative Olivo, LULAC, the NAACP, and other groups were able to eliminate high-stakes testing for third graders in the state of Texas in 2009—in the very bill that created the EOC tests, the 45 testing days, the 15% weight given to tests, etc.
