How “Originalism” Prevented America From Becoming Part of the Modern World by Umair Haque

I agree with Umair Haque that neither "originalists" nor "originalism" to which Judge Amy Coney Barrett aligns is anything to emulate. Far be it. Barrett's interpretation of the U.S. Constitution is nothing short of injurious to this country. Originalism is fundamentalism. It's a patriarchal, white supremacist, colonial project.

"Under a truly “originalist” interpretation of the Constitution, women wouldn’t have the right to vote. Wait, let me rephrase that, for the dorks reading this. We wouldn’t be able to rule out the possibility women shouldn’t have the right to vote. We wouldn’t be able to rule out the possibility that they belong to men, since they’re not really people at all. Now we’re just like ACB — spot the similarity."

If we don't evolve as a country, we most definitely atrophy and implode as a society—if it's not already happening. Never completely, I trust, but nevertheless in meaningful ways, beginning with our leadership in both the U.S. and the world.
