CAMARGO, Tamps. — Three people — including a man and woman inside a vehicle — were found dead Monday in separate attacks, authorities said.
Tamaulipas state police found a man and a woman shot to death inside a vehicle in a street in the Rancherías community near Camargo. State police continue to investigate those homicides.
In Miguel Alemán, across the river from Roma, police said another man was found fatally shot. The man was found dead in the Américo Villarreal neighborhood, just south of the Rio Grande and west of the city’s downtown. State police continue to investigate.
Cities across the border from South Texas have seen a surge in homicides since February, when the Zetas — a Miguel Alemán-based drug smuggling gang — broke its ties with the Gulf Cartel, the other dominant smuggling operation in the region. Since then, open street fights between cartel gunmen and the Mexican military have killed scores of suspected cartel members, innocent civilians and soldiers.
Last week, the U.S. State Department renewed its travel warning for people traveling in Tamaulipas and northeast Mexico, citing frequent reports of carjackings, robberies and unauthorized checkpoints along highways.
A recent report from the Mexican defense ministry revealed that nearly one third of all attacks on military soldiers this year have occurred in Tamaulipas, where bloodshed from the drug war has spread beyond the border region.
