I can never say enough about Academia Cuauhtli in Austin, Texas. I am so proud of what we have accomplished in 10 years, including our current coding and danza summer camp and La Colaborativa Cuauhtli, that with the generous assistance of the Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies at UT, brings teams of bilingual Spanish/English teachers to Mexico to explore partnerships and explore ways to transform the curriculum and modes of teaching in U.S. elementary school classrooms. This summer, nine teachers will be joining us here in Guanajuato, Mexico, where Dr. Emilio Zamora and I are scholars in residence at Resplandor International, an initiative of Dr. Todd Fletcher and the University of Arizona.

Nunca puedo compartir lo suficiente sobre nuestra escuelita, Academia Cuauhtli, en Austin, Texas. Estoy muy orgullosa de lo que hemos logrado en 10 años, incluyendo nuestro Aztech Kidz Coding Camp (campamento de codificación y danza Mexica) y La Colaborativa Cuauhtli, que con el generoso apoyo del Instituto Lozano Long de Estudios Latinoamericanos de la Universidad de Tejas en Austin, trae equipos de maestros bilingües español/inglés a México para explorar alianzas y formas de transformar el currículo y los modos de enseñanza en las escuelas primarias de EE. UU. Welcome to Academia Cuauhtli: A Social Architecture of Caring (cariño)" [VIDEO]

I am happy to share this video created by one of our Academia Cuauhtli maestras (teachers), Liliana Batista-Rodriguez whose regular job as a dual language teacher is at Harris Elementary School in the Austin Independent School District. 

It's so fulfilling running this escuelita (school) that represents a third space between the over-prescribed space of the school and the under-prescribed space of the home where freedom and liberation can be experienced. Texas State University professor, Dr. Chris Milk, and I call this a "social architecture of cariño" (caring). Dr. Milk has done a masterful job in working with the teachers during the summer months to develop an anti-racist, social justice, identity-centered curriculum that uplifts our children, parents, and community.

Our teachers, as a whole, are really strong in their view that their chief task is to prepare these children to navigate the complexities of school settings. This is SO important for children that are first-generation, working class immigrants whose parents are frequently invisible to our school systems. Our parents, on the other hand express, "Yo no quiero que mi hija (o hijo) pierdan su cultura (I don't want my daughter or son to lose their culture).

Ours is a curriculum that combines socioemotional learning, Ethnic Studies, and languages, meaning Spanish language development and basic Nahuatl. 

Our symbol is the eagle, or "cuauhtli," in Nahuatl. It inspires us to great heights, a special calling and opportunity for those in our community that oppose subtractive schooling, meaning the ways in which schools take away as a matter of course the actual strengths of language, community, and identity that these children bring with them to school. A first step is getting them to acknowledge just how powerful they are when these are centered.

Bienvenidos a Academia Cuauhtli / Welcome to Academia Cuauhtli

Welcome to Academia Cuauhtli as we work to go online as a Spanish language, cultural revitalization project as opposed to an in-person Saturday academy, this fall. Check out our website at AcademiaCuauhtli.com where our community can locate COVID resources. Congratulations to Austin Independent School District teacher, Maestra Liliana Batista-Rodriguez, bilingual/dual language teacher extraordinaire, for not only producing excellent work, as you can see below, but is also leading others teachers with whom we are working, as well. Hats off to Texas State University Professor, Dr. Chris Milk, who along with Liliana, has worked closely over the years with our many maestras (teachers).

Thanks to our partners, namely, the Austin Independent School District, the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, the Austin Area Association for Bilingual Education, The University of Texas at Austin, and the Indigenous Cultures Institute as we embark on our seventh year of operation, albeit in an online environment due to COVID. 

We are so grateful to all of the members of our community based organization, "Nuestro Grupo" (which means "Our Group," in Spanish), and our many volunteers, for keeping this work alive.

This is exciting!  More to come.
