An Invitation from UT History Professor Emilio Zamora: Teaching Texas History in an Age of Hyper Partisanship

An important message and an invitation from Dr. Emilio Zamora on two truly excellent recorded panels that shall get discussed at the annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) scheduled for February 24-26. You can view the conference program here if you'd like to attend. In the meantime, treat yourself to this rich, soulful conversation on teaching in an Age of Hyper Partisanship. This will get discussed in person at the actual forthcoming meeting.

-Angela Valenzuela

As an officer of the Texas State Historical Association (TSHA), I invite my Facebook friends to visit two extraordinary conversations involving Mexican American and African American scholars speaking on interpreting and teaching our histories in the present historical moment of constructive knowledge production and extreme reaction from the political right. The conversations are virtual recordings of two sessions organized by the TSHA as part of its 126th annual conference that is to be held on February 24-26, 2022, at the AT&T Center of the University of Texas at Austin. The first session, “Teaching Texas History at an Age of Hyper Partisanship,” is chaired by myself and includes John Moran Gonzalez (UT Austin), Bernadette Pruitt (Sam Houston State University), Lilliana Saldaña (University of Texas at San Antonio), and George Diaz (UTRGV). The second session, “Forgetting and Remembering: Why Does Searching for an Accurate Past Provoke Backlash?” is chaired by Light Cummins and includes Bryan Burrough (Vanity Fair), Peniel Joseph (UT Austin) and Monica Muñoz Martinez (UT Austin). The discussants are unapologetic and bold in expressing concerns about the challenges that we face at the same time that they offer ample reason for hope that we will persevere in the truth-telling of history. You are welcomed to register questions that we will address at the conference. The Fellows presentations are now available for you to watch and ask questions. Choose a session below to get started.
