USA Today: “Family separation combines cruelty, incompetence”

USA Today is out with a scathing editorial condemning the Trump administration’s cruelty and incompetence with respect to the separation of families, stating that with respect to their speedy reunification, failure is not an option.
As the editorial notes:
It turns out that the number of separated children is closer to 3,000 than the 2,000 originally cited by administration officials. Among them are about 100 under the age of 5. In dozens of those cases, parents have been deported minus their children, or HHS has apparently lost track of them.
The results are abominations, like what happened Friday when a 1-year-old boy, sipping from a bottle of milk and playing with a blue ball, appeared as an immigration defendant before a judge in Phoenix. The child’s father had been shipped off to Honduras.
Small wonder that two out of three Americans abhor what Trump has done with these children. In their frontal assault on illegal immigration, which has actually become less of a problem than it was several years ago, Trump and his lieutenants argue that when parents illegally enter the U.S. with their children, the adults cannot be simply freed pending immigration court proceedings.
But that’s disingenuous. There are established means of ensuring that parents show up for court and not disappear. A family case management effort vetted by the Department of Homeland Security in 2015 and an ankle-bracelet monitoring program are two alternatives to incarceration, that have both shown 99 percent success rates in guaranteeing court appearances. These alternatives are cheaper, too.
Cost considerations aside, reunifying children with their parents needs to be a top priority from a humanitarian standpoint. Leading experts on child behavior say children could suffer serious psychological damage with each passing day, week or month apart from a parent.
Sabraw was right to order that the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing parents harmed by Trump’s separation tactic, be provided a list of the 100 youngest children. Maybe the ACLU can help locate their parents.
The reunification process should be transparent. The American public should know the numbers daily: how many children remain detained; how many parents have been deported without their children; and how many reunifications have occurred. Precise numbers, not vague or rounded ones, are needed to generate confidence that children aren’t slipping through the cracks.
Family reunification is a true test of competency for the Trump administration. Failure is not an option.

“Trump’s abhorrent family separation policy now has a death toll”

Very urgent matter.  The death toll is adding up.

Read here about 39-year-old Honduran Marco Antonio Muñoz, 19-year-old Claudia Patricia Gómez González, and  19-year-old Manuel Antonio Cano Pacheco who are all dead as a result of this administration's draconian anti-immigration policy.  AVEF's Frank Sharry aptly states:
"Trump, Sessions and Nielsen have blood on their hands. This is their crackdown. They can dial it back whenever they choose. But they won’t, because they believe in their divisive and dehumanizing strategy and they believe it will help them hang onto power. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress to stay silent, and the death toll mounts.”

We must oppose this in every way possible  Please reach out to whoever represents you in Congress and urge them to institute humane, comprehensive immigration reform.  Go to this link to see who represents you and reach out ASAP.

“Trump’s abhorrent family separation policy now has a death toll”
Tragedy Strikes and Outrage Mounts Over the Trump Administration’s Cruelty

Washington, DC – Over the weekend, Nick Miroff of the Washington Post reported on the devastating story of Marco Antonio Muñoz, a Honduran father who was evidently so distraught about being separated from his wife and child as a result of the Trump Administration’s “zero tolerance” strategy, he committed suicide while in detention:

Much of the controversy generated by the approach has centered on its potentially traumatic impact for migrant children, but the government has said little about how it handles parents who become mentally unstable or violent after authorities split up their families.

Soon after Muñoz and his family were taken into custody, they arrived at a processing station in nearby McAllen and said they wanted to apply for asylum. Border Patrol agents told the family they would be separated. That’s when Muñoz “lost it,” according to one agent, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the incident.

“The guy lost his s---,” the agent said. “They had to use physical force to take the child out of his hands.”

Though Muñoz did not attempt to assault Border Patrol staff, he was at that point considered to be “pre-assault” because he was so agitated. As one agent described it, Muñoz “had the look of a guy at a bar who wanted to fight someone.”

“We had to get him out,” the agent said. “Those cells are about as secure as a dog kennel. He could have hurt someone.”

“He yelled and kicked at the windows on the ride to the jail,” an agent said. Shackled and handcuffed, Muñoz attempted to escape again upon arrival and once more had to be restrained.

Guards said they checked on Muñoz every 30 minutes and observed him praying in a corner of his cell the following morning.

Paramedics found Muñoz dead, his electrocardiogram showing a “flat line,” according to the report. The sheriff’s department said it attempted to contact Honduran authorities who could reclaim Muñoz’s body, but they received no answer at a consulate. Muñoz’s wife and son were later released from Border Patrol custody, according to one agent.

As journalist Jamil Smith tweeted:

“Donald Trump’s abhorrent family separation policy now has a death toll. Marco Antonio Muñoz, a Honduran father jailed apart from his wife and child, died from suicide inside a padded cell in Texas. This isn’t just affecting the kids.”

In the Philadelphia Inquirer, Will Bunch writes a blistering column entitled, “'Never Again'? 'Again' is Happening Right Now on America's Border. What Will You Do?” He writes of the growing number of young people now dead because of the Trump administration’ crackdown:

I want to write today about a suicide that has profound moral implications for what it means to be an American in 2018. And no, I’m not talking about either Kate Spade or Anthony Bourdain...This is about Marco Antonio Muñoz, a 39-year-old Honduran who died all alone last month in a rural Texas jail cell, with an item of clothing around his neck and a small pool of blood on a padded floor.

Muñoz was a casualty of the Trump administration’s cruel and inhuman “zero tolerance” policies ... the Munoz family asked for asylum in the nation that once celebrated its willingness to accept the tired, poor and hungry of the world. But that was a different century. This is 2018, and agents instead violently ripped the toddler out of the arms of a screaming Muñoz.

People are dying.

Claudia Patricia Gómez González is dead. A vivacious-looking 19-year-old woman who’d studied accounting and journeyed 1,500 miles north when she was unable to find work at home, Gonzáles was shot by a Border Patrol agent just north of the Texas border with Mexico last month.

Manuel Antonio Cano Pacheco is dead. He was the same age as González. His parents had brought him to a stable life in Iowa when he was only 3. Like most 19-year-olds, he made some mistakes — marijuana and driving offenses. That brought him to the attention of America’s stepped-up deportation forces, who stripped Pacheco — a teen dad, about to graduate high school — of his “Dreamer” status and took him across the border from Laredo, Texas, into Mexico, the “homeland” he’d never known. He was killed by drug gangs there just three weeks later.

We’ve done the right thing in teaching our children (and hopefully ourselves) to say, “Never again.” But we have to understand that “again” won’t come with a big bang and a giant sign that says “Human Rights Disaster!” Instead, it comes with these small but accelerating official acts of cruelty until the train is going too fast to stop — and with too many people too afraid to take the very real risk of speaking out to stop it.

...With Father’s Day looming … start the planning for a more active resistance of Trump’s inhumane policies. Because I can already hear that train coming down the tracks, and it’s only gaining steam.

According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice Education Fund:

“A father goes crazy when US government agents ‘use physical force’ to separate him from the wife and child he pledged to protect. Isolated in a padded cell, he kills himself in a jail in Texas. A young woman seeking a better life in America crosses the border and gets shot in the head and killed by a Border Patrol agent – for no apparent reason. A Dreamer gets sent back to Mexico, a country he can’t remember, ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and gets murdered by gangsters. This is not normal. Trump, Sessions and Nielsen have blood on their hands. This is their crackdown. They can dial it back whenever they choose. But they won’t, because they believe in their divisive and dehumanizing strategy and they believe it will help them hang onto power. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress to stay silent, and the death toll mounts.”

“Taking immigrants kids from parents shows contempt for families”

ICYMI: “Taking immigrants kids from parents shows contempt for families”

Washington, DC – In a Houston Chronicle op-ed, Dr. Reshem Agarwal and Dr. Marsha Griffin of the American Academy of Pediatrics state their strong opposition to the Trump administration family separation policy “due to the detrimental effects of cumulative stress upon a developing brain. Research shows overwhelmingly the deep and lasting harm caused by removing children from their parents.”

Read excerpts from Dr. Reshem Agarwal and Dr. Marsha Griffin’s op-ed below and find the piece in its entirety here:

We go to work each day as pediatricians to promote the health and well-being of children, and we form relationships with families from all walks of life. We see rich and poor, immigrant and native-born parents provide the steady love and care necessary to help their children heal from the simple fractures of childhood, endure the side effects of leukemia treatment or recover from surgeries. A new government policy of separating immigrant children from their parents shows contempt for this basic impulse of a parent to protect a child and fosters deep and lasting harm for children who may end up as our patients.

[ … ]

We recently visited a shelter for unaccompanied children run by the Office of Refugee Resettlement of the Department of Health and Human Services. Many of the children in that shelter entered the United States with their mothers or fathers but had been separated from them by immigration officials.

In a walled-in courtyard, we saw a 5-year-old girl chasing iridescent bubbles blown by two adults. Staff said she tried to run away any time she played outside, so she was limited to the courtyard. She would bite anyone who approached her, so she was kept away from other children and distracted with bubbles. Biting and seeking to run are signs of acute distress in a child of this age — a normal reaction to extreme fear.

This girl did not need bubbles and a walled courtyard but rather her mother or her father to calm her — someone who could hold her and make her world right again.

Children of “tender age” is what the shelter workers call the younger “unaccompanied” children in their care. These tender ones cannot understand why their mother or father was taken from them, and they don’t know when, or if, they will see them again. The bureaucracy of the federal immigration system makes it difficult for these children and parents to find each other, talk to each other on the phone or eventually reunify.

In a two-week period alone, 658 children were separated from their parents under the new “zero tolerance” policy. The Trump administration has described the practice as a way to deter other families from coming to the United States.

[ … ]

The American Academy of Pediatrics has taken a strong stance against separating already traumatized children from their parents, due to the detrimental effects of cumulative stress upon a developing brain. Research shows overwhelmingly the deep and lasting harm caused by removing children from their parents. A parent has a critical role to mitigate stress for children. Prolonged exposure to highly stressful situations — known technically as toxic stress — can alter brain architecture and hormone-signaling pathways, with lasting effects on the child’s health. This kind of stress makes children susceptible to acute and chronic conditions such as extreme anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, hypertension and heart disease.

The practice of separating immigrant children from their parents goes against everything we do as doctors to help families protect their children and promote their mental and physical development.

[ … ]

Removing children from their mother, and keeping them apart for days or weeks or months, devastates the most basic human relationship we know — that of child and parent. A policy that promotes this separation is a betrayal of our most precious values as Americans. Our country is better than this.

With No Transparency and Accountability, the Trump Administration Continues to Harm Children In Spite of Overwhelming Concern by Pediatricians

Accountability, the Trump Administration Continues to Harm Children In Spite of Overwhelming Concern by Pediatricians

More and more pediatricians are raising alarm bells regarding the serious and irreparable harm that the Trump family separation policy is having on children.  From the President of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), pediatricians who serve on the American Academy of Pediatrics Immigrant Health Special Interest Group to the president emeritus of the Children’s Defense Fund, all agree Trump’s separation policy “shows contempt for this basic impulse of a parent to protect a child and fosters deep and lasting harm for children.”
On top of the harm to children and the fear and anguish of parents, the Trump Administration has provided no answers to basic questions from Members of Congress, federal judges, public defenders, and even federal prosecutors and DHS personnel who are tasked with applying this new policy. The officials who are directing all of these actors to implement this radical and controversial policy — Attorney General Jeff Sessions and DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen — have questions to answer. Instead, they seem to be hiding. For example:
  • House Judiciary Committee Hearing with Secretary of Homeland Security Committee Cancelled:  The Secretary of HomeIand Security was supposed to appear before the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday.  Instead, the hearing was cancelled.
  • House Judiciary Democrats Demand Answers:  In response to Secretary Nielsen’s hearing cancellation, all Democrats of the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter demanding answers to basic questions by June 7, 2018, the day the Secretary was supposed to appear before the committee. No answers have been given to date.
  • Police Called to Remove U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley for Seeking Transparency and Accountability:  Senator Merkley requested a tour of a facility — a repurposed Walmart — that reportedly is detaining children separated from parents.  Not only was he refused entry, the police were called to remove him. This was all caught on video.  It is stunning that a Senator, responsible for federal oversight and accountable to taxpayers, is refused access to a facility operated under federal contract and paid for by taxpayers. It is shocking that the contractor called the police on him.
  • No Answers for Parents from DOJ Prosecutors, Federal Judges Prosecuting Parents, DHS, and Public Defenders:  When parents are separated from their children at the border, they are given no answers about who will take care of their kids, exactly where their children will go, how to reach them, and when and if they will be reunited with their children.  There are no answers from DHS who physically separate the parents from the children, and no answers from DOJ attorneys prosecuting and federal judges sentencing parents.
Ur Jaddou, Director of DHS Watch, a new project of America’s Voice, said:
Children are being ripped from parents, parents are given little or no information on the care of their children, they have little or no way to keep in contact with them, and they have no idea whether they will be reunited with their kids.  Yet, this Administration refuses to answer any questions, not even from Members of Congress. The public must know how their taxpayer money is being spent on this cruel and barbaric policy. This Administration must come clean, must open its doors and must be held accountable.
