Censorship is Hurtful – SB 3 and the Underlying HB 3979, Hurts all Students – Testimony by Morgan Craven

Friends,

Take a few minutes to listen to excellent IDRA Testimony against Senate Bill 3, Presented by IDRA National Director of Policy, Advocacy and Community Engagement Morgan Craven, J.D., to the Texas Senate State Affairs Committee, July 15, 2021.

She nails it that this bill is about censorship, hurtful, and has no place in civil, democratic society. We should also not pretend to care about hurting students by outlawing controversial topics while "routinely denying the hurt that Black students, Indigenous students, Latino students, Asian students, girls, LGBTQ students, girls and other groups have long felt in their schools." Rather than shutting down conversations in classrooms, our focus should be on policy remedies that have positive policy impacts. I couldn't agree more.

Morgan does a great job in pulling down the curtains behind SB 3 and House Bill 3979 as not really about hurting students at all, but about reinscribing white privilege and maintaining our highly inequitable status quo.
